I trained as a microbiologist but drastically changed the direction of my career when becoming fired by iron in 1986 and setting up my first workshop in the Cambridgeshire Fens, where I have lived and had my studios ever since.
I am largely self taught, and originally knowing very little about metalwork decided that the best way to learn about the medium was to work in engineering, starting at the very bottom and working my way up to become a skilled industrial metalworker. Having to split my time between my studio and industry has been hard, but recently at last I am able to be a full time maker.
I started making candlesticks but also developed metal bowls and vessels in steel, stainless steel and bronze which I widely exhibited and sold.
When Lasercutting became more widely available in the mid 1990’s I taught myself how to design and program and did a whole new range of work without using the forge.
I now concentrate on the clocks and candlesticks, gradually refining them over time.
I enjoy the mixture of using both ancient methods and the latest technology, and the robust nature of the material.
I can undertake commissions.
